Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Bogdan Bezpalko commented on how Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election will affect Washington’s policy towards Russia and the South Caucasus.

“I can speak very cautiously in this regard. There is no clear understanding yet on Trump’s plans in general, be it the South Caucasus, the Caspian region, or even the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. So far, we can only say that perhaps Trump will be more pragmatic in his approach and less ideological. For example, it is now known about the partial lifting of sanctions against Russian banks in the energy sector. But this is being done not because he wants to restore friendly relations with Russia, but because it is beneficial to the United States, among other things. This is the logic of business.

So I believe he will approach both the issues of relations between Russia and the US and the South Caucasus in this respect as well. Nevertheless, so far, no one has a clear understanding of the plan of Trump’s team and Trump himself. He hasn’t voiced it yet either. And he is not the president yet. That is, he was elected; he is a winner, but he will become a full-fledged president only in January 2025,” Bezpalko said.

According to the expert, all the promises made by Trump earlier are nothing more than election rhetoric.

“Nowadays the presidential campaign, well, for the last, let’s say, 10 years, is unprecedented both in terms of the amount of money spent, the number of election promises, and the scale of populism. So, so far, all this can be considered extremely radical populism, which was not typical of US presidential candidates before,” Bezpalko concluded.
