The more concessions there are, the more demands there will be – Denis Denisov
Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist Denis Denisov commented on Azerbaijan’s new demands, the situation in Syria, the latest statement by Turkish President Erdogan, and what will change with Donald Trump in the White House.
“Many in the world associate radical changes with Trump in office, including in the global security architecture and, in general, in global international relations. We already know from the previous presidency of Donald Trump what radical steps he took in a number of areas. First, apparently, the Trump administration will destroy all agreements and treaties that limit them, related to the military component. They did this during their first term. Now this will continue and will end with the destruction of agreements related to nuclear weapons, among other things. Because the people who financed Trump’s election campaign are interested in this,” Denisov said.
According to the political scientist, Turkey is laying claim to the role of regional leader.
“Of course, these changes that Erdogan is talking about will affect both Armenian-Azerbaijani relations and Turkish-Armenian relations. We understand perfectly well that Turkey is laying claim to the role of regional leader. Armenia is in this region. In this regard, I personally have many more questions about how the Armenian political elite will behave than answers to them. On the one hand, relations with Turkey are very difficult, and on the other hand, at the moment, Armenia simply does not have the resources to resist Turkey. Apparently, they need to negotiate and look for some compromises,” Denisov noted.
Speaking about the situation in Syria, the expert noted that we will witness destabilization of the situation in the region.
“Assad’s departure from the presidency is unlikely to lead to stabilization of the situation in Syria. It is very likely that this region will again become a zone of turbulence, which could spread to neighboring countries. Apparently, in the coming months we will witness significant destabilization of the situation in the region,” Denisov emphasized.
According to the political scientist, it is a paradox, but officially the Russian Foreign Ministry has not given a single critical comment regarding Turkey’s position and Turkey’s policy in the region in the last few days.
“In some regions, the interests of Russia and Turkey overlap and do not coincide; this is obvious. But at the same time, there are a number of problems and issues on which the positions coincide. This is a marriage of convenience. When it is convenient for them, they will agree. When it is inconvenient, it is quite possible that they will push each other out. This is an amazing modern policy,” Denisov said.
Commenting on Baku’s new demands in the negotiation process with Armenia, the political scientist noted that the more concessions there are, the more demands there will be.
“Representatives of Armenia and Azerbaijan should be asked to explain why nothing is being signed if everything has already been agreed upon. However, the Azerbaijani position is quite predictable and explainable. After all, Azerbaijan is currently acting as a winner, and it is trying to achieve maximum benefits for itself. Therefore, it often uses clearly inflated demands and inflated expectations to continue this negotiation process.
The law of real politics: the more concessions there are, the more demands there will be. As we understand, at the moment, neither side is very interested in signing any agreement. Because everyone understands perfectly well that in the conditions of the turbulent modern world of international relations, which are experiencing a severe crisis, one can try to achieve more and more. So far, a compromise is not even in sight. If the document were ready with clear positions, we would have known about it long ago,” Denisov concluded.
