Russian political scientist and Strategic Culture Foundation expert Andrey Areshev, speaking at the 3rd International Scientific-Practical Conference “Russian-Iranian Cooperation in a Changing World,” commented to Alpha News on the detention of prominent businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan.
“I believe that current authorities of Armenia are consistently challenging anyone they perceive as a threat to their monopoly, any politician, businessman, or churchman they consider dangerous. They are ready to stigmatize and impose a broad range of repressions against those they deem undesirable, beginning with various forms of media defamation,” Areshev stated.
According to Areshev, efforts to discredit Karapetyan have been ongoing for some time, driven by both political and economic motives.
“We know that the information campaign against Samvel Karapetyan has been going on for quite a long time. And it was not accidental. I believe that this is not solely about his statements regarding the Church but also about his broader activities, including his involvement in Armenia’s electric networks, which has led to differing stances from the current Armenian authorities. I think they are also trying to strengthen their economic positions by targeting the undesirable,” Areshev concluded.
