If you cite any legal risk, it must be specific – Aram Vardevanyan

The investigators were not presenting a position but merely reading from a paper that had no substantive connection to Samvel Karapetyan, lawyer Aram Vardevanyan said in a conversation with reporters.

“Any other material could have been presented. If we look at it from the perspective of the European Court’s case law, if you cite a legal risk that justifies continued restriction of a person’s right to personal liberty, it must be specific,” Vardevanyan said.

He noted that the investigative body claims there is a risk of absconding. “What exactly is Samvel Karapetyan supposed to be hiding from? This is clearly an absurd accusation,” he emphasized.

According to Vardevanyan, the concern surrounding Samvel Karapetyan is evident to any observer, and to understand the possible motives behind it, one should submit an inquiry to the Armenian government.
