Even formally it is meaningless to talk about peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, since only a preliminary document has been signed, political strategist Vigen Hakobyan said in an interview with Alpha News.
“Azerbaijan and Turkey have switched on a ‘soft regime’ for the Armenian authorities. A regime which, in their view, will help Armenia’s current leadership succeed in the upcoming nationwide elections and secure its power. This, first and foremost, stems from the interests of Azerbaijan and Turkey, because with today’s authorities and their leader they have a more than comfortable partner. And I say that no peace has been established. It is enough to listen to the rhetoric coming from official Baku, directly from Aliyev himself. All this shows that there is no novelty, no change whatsoever in Azerbaijan’s goals, strategies, or tactics,” the political strategist said.
According to Vigen Hakobyan, after the last war Ilham Aliyev is trying to become a regional leader in the South Caucasus.
“Alongside all this, he also has larger plans connected with gaining greater influence and significance in this new geopolitical situation. And Azerbaijan’s leadership considers that it has every right to harbor such ambitions—political, military-political, and especially economic. In other words, this is its global program for the near future,” he concluded.
