Absurdity and bewilderment: Zakharova on prosecution of Gyumri mayor for pro-Russian statements

Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that the arrest of Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan for his remarks about strengthening Armenia’s alliance with Russia is bewildering.

“Why is there no investigation and no punishment for those who push Armenia toward the EU, essentially calling for the abandonment of sovereignty?” Zakharova asked.

According to the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, this story has sparked significant public reaction in Russia as well, and criminal prosecution for a statement in support of a traditional ally appears absurd and contrary to common sense.
