The decision on possible accession to the European Union is the choice of the Armenian people, but Yerevan must take into account the changing nature of the EU, which is transforming from an economic union into a military-political one, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk told journalists, according to TASS.

“If at some point they begin such negotiations officially, those talks will take many years. And of course, it will be necessary to look at the dynamics of the European Union itself—what it is becoming. And here, among other things, it is necessary to see and follow the statements coming today from the European Commission, from Brussels, which are connected with the fact that the EU is transforming from an economic union into a military-political union. This also needs to be taken into account. The nature of the European Union is changing before our eyes,” he noted.

“Are Armenians ready to join a military-political union that today is very aggressively disposed toward Russia? Probably, that is a question Armenians will have to ask themselves. In any case, it has been repeatedly stated that the choice in favor of one or another integration association is always the choice of the Armenian people,” the Russian Deputy Prime Minister added.

“And here, obviously, certain decisions will have to be made at some point, because indeed, this has also been discussed a lot, both here and in Armenia, and Nikol Pashinyan has spoken about it: everyone understands that Armenia cannot simultaneously be in two integration associations. Therefore, if such a choice is ever made, it will be of a comprehensive nature, taking into account the dynamics that we see today in the changing nature of the European Union,” Overchuk concluded.
