The question of Armenia’s withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union cannot be discussed until Armenia itself submits a corresponding application and expresses such a desire. That is what Ararat Mirzoyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, told Aysor .am, commenting on a statement by Alexey Overchuk, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

“Until Armenia has declared such an intention, the question of our withdrawal cannot be discussed. And we have not expressed any such desire,” Mirzoyan stressed.

When asked when Armenia might take such a decision, the foreign minister replied:
“When the need to discuss this question arises. I cannot give any timeline, this issue is not on our agenda today.”

Commenting on the suggestion that Armenia’s EAEU membership might be frozen pending a final decision, Mirzoyan stated: “That cannot happen. This is an organization where decisions are made by consensus, including Armenia’s vote. How could that even be possible?”

As a reminder, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk stated the previous day that Armenia faces a choice between the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union.
