US specialists visiting Yerevan identify 4 technologies for modular reactors

The US Embassy in Armenia stated that it welcomes the continued progress of Armenian-American cooperation in the field of civilian nuclear energy. As part of the US State Department’s “Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology” program, experts from Sargent & Lundy were in Armenia from May 19 to 22 to provide further technical consultations on small modular reactor technology.
Working with Armenian officials, Sargent & Lundy completed a preliminary technical and economic assessment of the feasibility of replacing the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant with new advanced American small modular reactor technologies.
“Key findings:
🔹 Four of the most suitable American small modular reactor technologies were identified for deployment in Armenia;
🔹 Technical support was aligned with the best practices of the International Atomic Energy Agency;
🔹 The highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation were kept at the forefront;
🔹 Options for building replacement capacity following the decommissioning of the Armenian NPP were examined,” the statement reads.
