Dmitry Drobnitsky, a political scientist specializing in American affairs, commented to Alpha News on the news that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Yerevan.

“Naturally, the situation in Armenia is extremely unstable. And Rubio must at least check how stable the situation is and whether American assets are reliable. This is simply his direct responsibility. If this were the Obama or Biden administration, it would be clear what forces and resources could be brought to bear. However, in the case of Rubio, a big question arises as to what exactly he will be able to rely on. Because the leadership of the US State Department under Marco Rubio, under Trump, is generally speaking largely hanging in the air. We can see that the State Department has effectively been sidelined from many diplomatic processes. It sometimes offers commentary, but it is clear that it is not playing first fiddle,” the expert said.

In the American affairs specialist’s view, Rubio’s visit is effectively aimed at assessing possible risks to American assets.

“I think this will be a fairly conservative attempt not in the ideological sense, but in the methodological sense. They need to understand that under any circumstances the American asset there must remain in order, without major upheavals that could jeopardize this complex node on which much depends. Therefore his task is to make sure everything will be under control,” Drobnitsky said.
