Nikol Pashinyan may comment on the requirement to hold referendums in EAEU member states regarding accession to the EU in any way he chooses, but in any case, he will have to answer to Armenia’s partners in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Hayk Khalatyan, editor-in-chief of Alpha News‘ Moscow bureau, said this during a live broadcast.

“In effect, the four other EAEU member states have presented Armenia with an ultimatum to make a decision by December. Pashinyan can keep saying that no final decision has been made yet, but he is being challenged with the argument that the relevant bill has already been adopted in Armenia. Senior Russian officials have also stated that Moscow does not intend to finance Armenia’s path toward the EU. One way or another, Nikol Pashinyan will have to make a choice,” Khalatyan emphasized.

According to him, Pashinyan’s hopes that he will somehow be able to persuade Moscow to change its approach after the elections will not yield any results.

“If Pashinyan wins these elections, Moscow will specifically demand concessions and concrete steps. And if he tries to meet those demands, it will create serious problems with the centers of power and forces that support him today: the EU, the United States, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, as a result of Nikol Pashinyan’s policies, Armenia has found itself in a very difficult situation, and any decision he makes creates serious problems for our country,” Hayk Khalatyan said.
