Argentina fans riot in Buenos Aires, police use water cannons and tear gas

At least 15 people were detained during riots that broke out near the Obelisk in central Buenos Aires after Argentina’s national team lost in the football World Cup final, Argentine media report.

According to media reports, after the match ended, thousands of fans gathered near the Obelisk to show support for the national team. The gathering was initially peaceful, but a group of people later began throwing rocks and bottles at police officers. In addition, several people broke through the barrier around the Obelisk and were subsequently detained by police.

Seven police officers were injured in the clashes. Law enforcement reportedly used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the aggressive rioters, and reports also cite 15 detentions.

As a reminder, the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina took place the day before in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Spain won 1:0 thanks to a goal by Ferran Torres, scored in extra time. “La Roja” became world champion for the second time in its history.
