In recent days, tension in parliament has escalated over statements by MPs from the Civil Contract faction who, following the government’s line, refer to the Catholicos of All Armenians by a derogatory name. Movses Sahakyan, Priest and Acting Director of the Information System of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, stated that this amounts to targeted hate speech and an abuse of the National Assembly’s platform to incite intolerance toward the Armenian Church and clergy.

According to him, such statements insult the religious feelings of believers around the world and create new lines of division in society. Sahakyan emphasized that amid numerous internal and external challenges, the country needs responsibility and respect toward society and voters, rather than turning parliament into a platform for hostility and slander.
