When will construction of the second bridge on the Armenian-Iranian border begin

Armenia has not yet determined a timeline for beginning construction of the second bridge over the Araks River on the border with Iran. This can be concluded from the response of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure to a written inquiry from Sputnik Armenia.

The inquiry asked when construction work is planned to begin, by what date the new bridge will be put into operation, and also requested data on the project’s estimated cost and its funding sources. A question was also asked regarding the integration of the project with the “North-South” corridor.

“We inform you that the issue of building the second bridge over the Araks River is currently still at the discussion stage with the Iranian side, and therefore it is not possible to provide information on the questions asked,” the ministry noted.

As a reminder, planning work on the new bridge over the Araks began in late 2023. Yerevan had also considered the possibility of building it parallel to the existing bridge, constructed in 1995. In August 2025, it became known that Armenia and Iran had agreed on the construction of a second bridge over the Araks River.

Sputnik Armenia notes that the construction of this bridge over the Araks River on the Armenian-Iranian border is of strategic importance for both countries for several key reasons. In the future, it will resolve the “bottleneck” (crossing) problem, ease congestion at the border, eliminate multi-kilometer lines of trucks, and significantly reduce customs clearance time for carriers. In addition, the new bridge will become part of the global “North-South” transport corridor.
