Fuel depot explosion near Stepanakert: the tragedy of September 2023

On September 25, 2023, a tragic explosion occurred at a fuel depot located on the Stepanakert–Askeran highway, becoming one of the most painful chapters for dozens of families amid the forced deportation from Artsakh.

Following Azerbaijan’s military aggression, thousands of Artsakh residents were trying to obtain fuel to leave for Armenia. As a result of the explosion, which occurred during this time, hundreds of people were killed or suffered injuries of varying severity.

According to official figures, more than 218 people died as a result of the explosion and the severe burns that followed. The identities of many of them could only be established through DNA testing, and some people are still considered missing.
