Rosatom officially offers Armenia new 1 GW nuclear plant in international consortium format: Likhachev

Rosatom has officially offered Armenia to build a new nuclear power plant with a capacity of 1 GW in the format of an international consortium.

This was stated by Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the Rosatom state corporation, at a press conference at Zvartnots Airport in Yerevan.

According to him, the Armenian government is expected to make a final decision within the next few months on the technical design and the choice of a partner for building the new nuclear power plant.

“Rosatom has already submitted to the Armenian side an official proposal for building a VVER-1000 unit (with a capacity of 1,000 MW or more). The Russian side is ready to carry out this project in the format of an integrated international consortium, involving manufacturers from other countries in the construction (for example, France, Korea and China), if that is Yerevan’s wish. According to expert forecasts, given the annual growth in electricity consumption (about 4%), by 2036 Armenia will need exactly this amount of baseload generation to cover the deficit,” he said.
