The act of the armed Azerbaijani could result in life imprisonment, Aram Vardevanyan, Vice Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, told journalists in parliament.

“I am convinced that, besides the intrusion, the illegal crossing of the state border and a number of other circumstances, we are also dealing with an attempt on a person’s life, and not just one person but children as well, so the attack was carried out against a group of people.

And essentially, judging by the description I heard from media representatives, even the possibility of life imprisonment may be considered, since the tragic consequences apparently did not depend on the person’s will. I think it is appropriate to emphasize the Azerbaijani nationality, since these are factual data, and his intention was precisely such.

It is another matter that we dealt with a situation in which a maternal instinct was manifested. I consider it important that this person is currently in custody, but it is still unclear to me why the preliminary investigation has not yet been completed and the case has not been sent to court.

I believe the case in question could also become the subject of an open court hearing, since I do not see any special confidentiality regime, but it is obvious that the assessment here must be more than strict from the standpoint of the prosecution, and there are every ground for it. The actions of the person in question in the Republic of Armenia should be given a proper and strict legal assessment, based on the circumstances of the case,” Vardevanyan said.
