A group of 24 Members of the European Parliament have called on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to ensure Armenia’s security.

“At a time when the European Union and the United States are stepping up their support for Yerevan, we, 24 MEPs, ask Ursula von der Leyen and Antony Blinken to ensure the security of Armenia, which is threatened by Azerbaijan,” Nathalie Loiseau, Chair of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Security and Defense, said on X.

In a joint letter, the MEPs welcome the April 5 trilateral meeting in Brussels, which marked the beginning of a concrete engagement by the European Union and the United States to support Armenia, its democracy, security and territorial integrity.

The letter says that the international community has been passively observing the 2020 Karabakh war, Azerbaijan’s brutality towards Nagorno-Karabakh and the fact of Baku’s occupation of parts of Armenia’s territories.

“Azerbaijan does not abandon its hostile rhetoric towards Armenia, accusing it of imaginary provocations. We cannot remain unresponsive to threats to democracy and are convinced that Armenia is looking for nothing else but to live in peace with its neighbors and choose its own path,” the letter says.

The MEPs urge von der Leyen and Blinken to go to Armenia and demonstrate to the Armenian people that they are not alone in their struggle for survival and freedom.
