Armenian-born MP elected vice president of Uruguay Chamber of Representatives
Pedro Jisdonian, Uruguayan MP of Armenian origin, was elected vice president of the Chamber of Representatives of Uruguay, the Armenian Embassy reports.
In speeches preceding the election, the Uruguayan MPs emphasized the Armenian origin of Jisdonian and congratulated the Armenian community of Uruguay on the election of the latter. Jisdonian, in his speech, spoke about his Armenian roots and the situation in Armenia.
“Many lawmakers mentioned the origin of my ancestors, the distant homeland of Armenia, which, both at the beginning of the 20th century and today, is going through hard times. There are reported cases of violence and intolerance by Azerbaijan and its accomplices that must be condemned. Uruguay had set an example for the world by being the first country to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide. The protection of human rights and the right to live freely and peacefully is of fundamental importance,” the MP noted.
