Armenia used to be “from sea to sea”, today it is “from interview to interview”

Many people still often use the expression “from sea to sea Armenia” out of habit when talking about Armenia. In reality, when talking about the current Armenian statehood, it is more correct to use the expression “from interview to interview Armenia”. The point is that recent years can be loosely divided into periods, from one interview with Nikol Pashinyan and his political partners to another. What is noteworthy is that with each such interview, the residence area of Armenians is shrinking more and more.

If you remember, on September 26, 2020, Nikol Pashinyan gave an interview to Armenian public television, from the preview of which we learned that there would be a significant piece dedicated to the Armenian-Azerbaijani talks of that period. Before that, Nikol Pashinyan promised to disclose such confidential details that would “blow up Azerbaijan from the inside”.

However, many did not notice that on September 28, 2020, a small excerpt of this interview dedicated to the topic of Azerbaijan was published, with Pashinyan presenting information that was supposed to “blow up Azerbaijan from the inside”.

According to Pashinyan, in September 2018, when he met with President Ilham Aliyev at the CIS session, Aliyev asked him not to touch on the topic of Azerbaijan during the election campaign being conducted in those days in Yerevan (early mayoral elections were held in the capital), as Aliyev was afraid of the “transit of the revolution to Azerbaijan”.

Of course, the topic of “transit of revolutions” is not new to political discourse around the world; however, the previously announced statements that allegedly Pashinyan could reveal such confidential details that would “blow up Azerbaijan” do not correspond to the level of this “revelation”.

What happened after this interview on September 26, 2020? The war ended in a humiliating defeat, which, due to Pashinyan’s “diplomatic efforts”, was transformed into a complete loss of Artsakh in 2023.

Earlier in March this year, one of the Azerbaijani TV companies released a preview of an interview with the former President of Artsakh, Arayik Harutyunyan. It is noteworthy that almost immediately after the high-profile preview of this interview, Nikol Pashinyan held a press conference and announced the surrender of the territories in Tavush to Azerbaijan’s control, stressing that these territories never belonged to Armenia.

Circles actively involved in the political processes in Armenia, as well as those who generally understand the logic of political processes, may have reasonable doubts that these two events are directly related to each other.

The fact, however, is that even after this interview of Nikol Pashinyan’s political partner, the Armenian territories are shrinking. The residence area of Armenians is shrinking.

But the current stage of reducing the Armenian residence area does not seem to be enough, and on the eve of April 22, Nikol Pashinyan gives an interview to the British media, the main leitmotif of which is that Armenia will continue to follow the planned path, such as disproportionate concessions to Azerbaijan, the expulsion of Russia from the region, and actions that could potentially lead to the loss of control over the border with Iran. In other words, the new interview is an announcement of a new stage of geopolitical upheaval for Armenia.

We said it the day before, and we will say it again: Nikol Pashinyan will not stop, no matter what the cost. This is the most important factor for any kind of reflection on the situation in Armenia and the region as a whole.
