It is in the interests of the US to foment instability in the region – Mikhail Tilman

Speaking with Alpha News, Mikhail Tilman, director of the Center for Theological and Political Research, commented on the goals and objectives of the United States in the South Caucasus region.

“The US wants not only to take Armenia and Azerbaijan out of Russia’s zone of influence, as post-Soviet republics, but also to preferably draw them into NATO’s zone in some way. The US has two goals in the South Caucasus. The first is to really undermine Russia or try to undermine Russia on its southern borders. For this, Armenia is precisely the most attractive target.

The second point, a very important one, is that, in fact, world trade, the famous Great Silk Road, passes either directly through the Caucasus or near the South Caucasus. For the Americans, naturally, it is very important to have some control over this road to dominate the world.

That is, two goals are being pursued here. The first, more mundane goal is to somehow distance Armenia and Azerbaijan from Russia,” Tilman said.

According to the expert, one should not expect positive results from Armenian-American cooperation in the strategic sphere.

“Another very important point. How reliable is an ally like the United States? The United States only needs the United States itself. The Americans only need the Americans themselves. The Americans use what is convenient for them. The Americans can at any moment make a 180 and tell Armenia to resolve its own issues. Personally, I do not expect any particularly positive results from Armenian-American cooperation in the strategic sphere,” Tilman noted.

According to the expert, the Americans want to foment instability in the region.

“For the Americans, the main thing is to foment some instability and for Armenia to leave the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which, by the way, is almost a decided issue. Armenia is unlikely to leave the economic association; it is simply impossible, but it may well leave the CSTO.

“Fomenting potential instability in the region is, naturally, in the interests of the United States. Armenia’s withdrawal from the CSTO will occur as a result of the current policy of the Armenian leadership. And they (the Armenian authorities), naturally, expect that the Americans will like it very much, and they really will like it,” Tilman concluded.

The expert also commented on the recent election in Iran, the debates of US presidential candidates, and Armenia’s recognition of the independence of Palestine.
