Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on the statement of the President of the Armenian National Assembly Alen Simonyan that the Armenian authorities should reconsider having Russian border guards on the border with Turkey and Iran.

“Perhaps Alen Simonyan did not follow Nikol Pashinyan’s press conference very closely. The basic document from 1992 regulates the stay of Russian border guards in Armenia. It is an agreement on the status of the Russian border troops in the republic. It is of unlimited duration,” Zakharova noted, adding that the Russian border guards have repeatedly proved the need for their presence.

According to her, a productive large-scale interaction that has been established apparently “irritates some politicians in Yerevan.”

“We have to take into account how the unprotected border will affect the country’s security when the situation in the region is not fully normalized. It seems to me that when people who are not experts think so freely on the topic, maybe it would make sense to give the floor to those who put their lives on the line,” the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson added.
