Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation from the US Congress on Sunday, Azerbaijani media reported. During the meeting, Aliyev noted that trade relations have already been established between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Stressing the “historical significance of the agreements reached,” Aliyev highlighted the role of US President Donald Trump in facilitating this progress. The Azerbaijani president stated that his country will continue its efforts to promote the regional peace agenda. Aliyev also mentioned the export of Azerbaijani oil products to Armenia, as well as the supply of grain to Armenia from Kazakhstan and Russia via Azerbaijani territory.
At the same time, Aliyev voiced dissatisfaction with Section 907 of the 1992 Freedom Support Act, which bans direct US aid to Azerbaijan’s government due to its blockade and use of force against Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Highly appreciating Section 907’s suspension by President Trump, Aliyev expressed hope that members of US Congress would continue working towards its complete repeal.
