Aliyev sends signals to Pashinyan: little time left before parliamentary elections – Andranik Hovhannisyan
A few days ago, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev once again urged Armenia not to lose time and sign a peace agreement. At the same time, he highlighted two key preconditions for signing the agreement: the dissolution of the Minsk Group and amendments to the Armenian Constitution. Alpha News discussed this topic with foreign affairs specialist Andranik Hovhannisyan.
“Aliyev is signaling to the current Armenian authorities, saying, ‘Don’t waste time. There’s only a year and a half left before the upcoming parliamentary elections. If you don’t seize the opportunity, your chances of re-election will be quite low.’ Obviously, the current government has a very low rating. Of course, it is not that the opposition has a higher rating, but nevertheless, if they act together, they could potentially form a new government. That is, the opposition has opportunities to come to power, whereas the government’s probability of re-election is rather slim,” the foreign affairs specialist noted.
According to Hovhannisyan, even if Armenia amends its Constitution, Baku will not stop making new demands.
“I believe this is, to some extent, a threat to Armenia because Aliyev claims that Armenia has allegedly started the process of militarization and could pose a threat to the whole region. I am more than sure that even after the constitutional changes, the demands will not cease. Azerbaijan will put forward new demands to make the most out of the current situation,” Hovhannisyan said.
