All ARF-nominated Armenian candidates won in Beirut local government elections — George Grigoryan
The next round of local government elections took place in Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, and the Bekaa Governorate on May 18. Alpha News spoke with George Grigoryan, the communications director of the ARF Central Committee in Lebanon, on this topic.
“Unlike in other countries, local government elections in Lebanon are held in two stages. The first stage took place on May 4 in the Mount Lebanon Governorate. The Armenian town of Bourj Hammoud is located there, along with other cities and villages where Armenians live. In Bourj Hammoud, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun was represented both on the municipality list and on the list of district heads, and achieved success. As a result, 14 of the 21 members elected to the Bourj Hammoud Municipality were Armenians. If we consider the elections in other places, a total of 33 Armenians were elected as municipality members or district heads,” Grigoryan said.
According to him, three more Armenian candidates won the elections in the Beirut Governorate.
“In one of Beirut’s districts, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun presented a list of 12 candidates, including seven Armenians, with the rest representing various communities in Lebanon. Here, too, a complete victory was achieved. To sum up, I will note that three Armenian candidates for the city council—nominated by other Armenian parties—secured wins in the Beirut Governorate. Additionally, of the 24 city council candidates supported by the ARF Dashnaktsutyun, 23 were elected, resulting in an overwhelming majority. In other words, all the Armenian candidates nominated by the ARF in Beirut won,” Grigoryan concluded.
