These resolutions will be useless unless the EU executive takes appropriate action, Head of the ARF-D Hay Dat European Office Gaspar Karapetyan said, referring to the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on October 5.
“This is the second time the European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling on the EU executive bodies to impose sanctions against Azerbaijan. This resolution is more specific and detailed in its requirements. It also shows a huge gap between the demands of the EU Parliament and the real EU policy towards Armenia and Artsakh. In fact, what matters is official policy of the EU.
The resolution is also addressed to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen about her shameful policy towards Azerbaijan.
We are sincerely grateful to the European Parliament for its commitment to the EU system of values and upholding justice. However, these resolutions will remain useless unless the EU executive takes appropriate action. Until now, both the EU and the EU External Action Service supported the Azerbaijani ‘integration policy’ of Artsakh Armenians, although it was clear that this so-called integration meant either submission to the dictatorial regime or emigration, there were no security guarantees.
This approach and impunity pushed Aliyev to commit ethnic cleansing. Although it is obvious that Russian peacekeepers bear primary responsibility as guarantors of the provisions of the Trilateral Statement, the EU has not yet done anything real to make Azerbaijan understand that it cannot continue its genocidal policy. This is a sad reality.
Therefore, the Armenian side assessed the situation with extreme sobriety, which has so far been incomplete, and acted accordingly, because the risks to our statehood in this geopolitical turmoil are immense,” he said.
