Anatoly Matviychuk: After the non-aggression pact between Poland and Germany, Poland disappeared from world maps
He started dalliances with NATO and very close cooperation with France. The NATO command congratulated Armenia on Army Day, which indicated that relations were intensifying and Armenia could supposedly hope for security from NATO. The French sent such a lengthy letter in which it was stated that the French Republic is very concerned about Armenian security and that it will help them. So, I believe, Pashinyan made such a statement so that it would not be unexpected—firstly, for the ally, and secondly, for the population of the republic—that diversification changes the (geopolitical) vector. The vector is changing not towards Russia but towards the West,” the expert said.
Matviychuk sees no reason to sign any agreements with Azerbaijan at all, since in fact there was no war between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“I actually don’t understand what kind of peace treaty Pashinyan is going to sign with Azerbaijan. They were not at war. De jure, there was no war. These were border conflicts with war on disputed territory, which really did not belong to any state. If this is Azerbaijan, then this is an internal conflict; the gendarme operation was carried out to bring the rebellious republic to a certain state. If Armenia recognized at least the independence of Karabakh, this would be a casus belli, a reason for war, and we could now talk about some kind of measures. But it wasn’t like this,” Matviychuk emphasized.
According to Matviychuk, one should not rely too much on pacts, since some examples in history show that they played a negative role for some countries.
“Pashinyan is a cunning fox and understands his vulnerability. There is Nakhichevan. Whether we want it or not, in order to get to Nakhichevan, we need to overcome the cordon that is the Republic of Armenia, recognized by the world community. To get there, you need to establish the corridor. If Armenia does not want to let it pass peacefully, this is a reason for military intervention. This is already a real war. I believe that he just wants to forestall events and sign a non-aggression pact, i.e., to obtain some legal documents stating that Azerbaijan will not claim the territories that currently belong to Armenia.
Such high hopes were placed on the non-aggression pact between Poland and Germany. However, it resulted in Poland disappearing from world maps in two weeks,” Matviychuk concluded.
