Ara Poghosyan: No agreement can restrain Azerbaijan
At first, the Armenian authorities complained that there was no arms seller, now they complain that there is money, but no arms, political scientist Ara Poghosyan told Alpha News, referring to the Armenian authorities’ latest statements.
“Security relations are multisectoral relations. We are talking not only about military cooperation but also about economic, social, etc. It is very important to understand what the Armenian authorities mean when they talk about diversifying security relations. If they mean, in particular, military relations or arms-related cooperation, these are quite different terms. Judging by their words over the past three years, I think that they are talking about arms, because, as we know, the Armenian authorities complained for a long time that there was no arms seller, and then they said that there is money but no arms. Now the Armenian authorities are trying to link arms purchases with Western types of weapons,” Poghosyan said.
The political scientist noted that all this can be assumed from Pashinyan’s latest speech.
“This can be understood from the Prime Minister’s latest speech. In particular, when he spoke about modern weapons, it seemed that he was referring to Western weapons only.
As for mutual arms control, this means creating some kind of mechanism that would allow both sides to have records on the import and quantity of each other’s weapons, etc. But I think that one tank on the Armenian side will be enough for Azerbaijan to use this against Armenia itself and declare that Armenia has violated the agreement,” Ara Poghosyan noted.
He stressed that no agreement could restrain Baku.
“The non-aggression pact only aims to solve the problem in the short term. Only a person who does not know Azerbaijan can hope that any agreement, especially one like this, will be able to restrain Azerbaijan,” Ara Poghosyan concluded.
