Armenia can hardly be a member of both the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union at the same time, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in a press briefing in response to a question by TASS.

“Being a member of two different organizations, hypothetically speaking, is simply impossible. We have one customs area, one zone of free movement of goods and services, people and capital here, but they [the EU – ed.] have other norms,” the Kremlin spokesperson said.

He added that it is still difficult to assess the significance of Armenia’s possible membership in the EU.

“It depends on what accents the Armenian side will have,” Peskov said, assessing the prospects of further relations of the Eurasian Economic Union member states with Armenia.

Peskov called EU accession a sovereign right of Armenia but expressed confidence that participation in the EAEU is beneficial for the country. He emphasized that participation in the EAEU benefits not only Armenia as a state but also the people of the country.

The Kremlin spokesperson also added that Russia values relations with both Armenia and Azerbaijan and will do everything to develop relations with both countries.
“We have good relations with both Azerbaijan and Armenia. We value these relations, and we intend to do everything we can to further develop these relations,” Peskov told journalists.
