Armenia understands that its economic prosperity is ensured by Russia – Andrey Klimov
Speaking with Alpha News, Andrey Klimov, Deputy Chair of Russia’s Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, commented on the meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan.
“Apparently, they do understand in Yerevan that Armenia’s current economic prosperity is largely ensured by bilateral relations with our country—not so much with the Eurasian Economic Union, but with Russia. Therefore, as I understand it, they do not rush to break off relations with us without receiving some serious guarantees—not verbal, but some serious bonuses from their current Western partners. It is difficult to say anything yet, because after all, the decision in Armenia is not made by their foreign minister; he only conveys positions. In any case, it is useful that people meet, talk, exchange opinions, and listen to each other’s positions.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to say what this will result in. We can say that this meeting has brought some clarity. After all, Lavrov is right in saying that it is very important to have a direct dialogue rather than rely on rumors, media reprints, or other information. That is, this ‘megaphone diplomacy’ is, of course, completely unacceptable in such relations. Let’s see how and what will happen in practice, because the twists and turns that Yerevan is demonstrating to us are, of course, difficult to explain from the standpoint of common sense,” Klimov said.
