Speaking with Alpha News, Canadian MP from Quebec Sona Lakhoyan Olivier elaborated on Canada’s position regarding the Armenian hostages unlawfully detained in Baku.

“The change of the Canadian Prime Minister may affect the country’s foreign policy. Canada has traditionally supported the protection of human rights and adherence to international principles. The new Prime Minister will likely continue this approach, which will also include addressing the issue of Armenian POWs held in Baku,” she noted.

She noted that the Canada Foreign Minister has always called for the release of Armenian POWs.

“Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly has said that Canada demands the release of all Armenian prisoners of war. She has also called for the release of all Armenians detained in Azerbaijan. Of course, when Melanie Joly says this, it reflects the Canadian government’s position. Justin Trudeau’s government also expressed concern about the detention of Armenian prisoners of war in Baku. The new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, should also continue this policy,” she said.

Sona Lakhoyan Olivier further stressed that Canada supports the negotiations for a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, aiming for a just and lasting peace in the region.
