Armenian Genocide memorial desecrated in London
The Armenian Genocide memorial that was recently inaguarated in the London Borough of Ealing has been desecrated, the Armenian National Committee of the United Kingdom reported.
The memorial was desecrated 10 days after its inauguration. During that day, a group of masked extremists waving Turkish flags and making the gestures of the Grey Wolves terror group arrived at the scene to terrorize the Armenian community.
“The Grey Wolves gesture is the moral equivalent of a Nazi salute,” said Annette Moskofian, Chair of the Armenian National Committee of the United Kingdom. She added that history is repeating itself.
“Even in a civilized and developed country like the UK, we have seen these attempts to intimidate our community, and the extremists who agree with the approach of the Turkish and Azeri governments feel able to threaten us with their hatred and racism,” Moskofian said.
Moskofian added that within 10 days of the inauguration ceremony, the memorial was desecrated by bright yellow paint, and the word Genocide on the plaque was scratched as if someone was trying to erase it.
Fortunately, the memorial is under CCTV camera surveillance, and the police are actively investigating the incident as a “hate crime”.
Moskofian is convinced that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and held accountable.
