Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople condemns Bolu Mayor’s anti-Armenian remarks

Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople Sahak Mashalian expressed his indignation over the racist and anti-Armenian stance of Bolu Mayor Tanju Ozcan, a member of the People’s Republican Party (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi/CHP), as reported by the “Agos” Armenian bilingual weekly newspaper published in Turkey.
“The Armenian community, which has lived in these territories for centuries, is an indigenous and integral part of this country. This ancient nation has made significant cultural, economic and social contributions to these lands throughout history and continues to do so today with the same determination. Bolu Mayor Tanju Ozcan’s hate speech against the Armenian identity openly targets our shared past and the will to live together. Such remarks, whether made yesterday or today, have never contributed to fraternity, unity, or social solidarity—and never will. The legalization of hate speech and statements that endanger public tranquility can never be ignored.
I therefore call on the relevant authorities and the public to make more responsible statements. We strongly condemn all forms of discriminatory and disparaging remarks directed against the Armenian community or any other nation or people. Equality, respect, and universal values are the foundation of communities living together. Any approach that undermines these principles offends not only minorities but society as a whole,” the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople said.17:01
