Attempt to lure Armenia into ‘Eurotrap’ will result in huge problems for republic — Vitaly Milonov

Speaking with Alpha News, Russian MP Vitaly Milonov commented on the possibility of Armenia joining the European Union, the statement by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the need to re-examine the issue of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, and what Armenia should expect from Donald Trump’s presidency.
According to the MP, the Eurasian Economic Union and the EU are different economic systems, and European integration means a break with Eurasian integration.
“The Armenian authorities expect to deceive the people and promise them some sweet dreams from joining the European Union, for which the population, apparently, must support the specific anti-Armenian position of the current Armenian authorities. Armenia will definitely not feel any advantages from joining the European Union, but the fact that they want to reduce economic relations with Russia will indeed have serious consequences. Russia is Armenia’s largest trade partner.
It is obvious that the EAEU and the EU have different economic systems, and the desire for European integration means that the Armenian leadership will call on the country’s businessmen to stop making money and wait for profitable relations with Brussels. I personally do not know what kind of relations these will be and where they will find a gold mine. Yes, European integration means a break with another integration. The positive trends in Armenia’s economic indicators that we see are growing precisely from partnership relations with Russia, and not vice versa. But does Russia dictate any political demands to Armenia?
Of course not, Armenia is a sovereign state. Unlike, by the way, the European Union, which will force Armenia to follow the path it tried to follow with other countries. But the most dangerous thing is that the attempt to lure Armenia into a ‘Eurotrap’ will result in huge problems for the republic, which Armenia will not be able to bear. We must not forget that Armenia has borders with neighbors who have repeatedly demonstrated a fairly aggressive position,” Milonov said.
According to the MP, reexamining the issue of the Genocide is tantamount to betraying the memory of the victims of this crime.
“The issue of the Armenian Genocide is a historical fact recognized at the international level. To reconsider the issue of the Genocide is the same as betraying the memory of those millions of Armenians who became victims of terrible aggression. Unfortunately, any person who knows world history, the history of the emergence of fascism in the 20th century, knows that fascism began with the Ottoman Empire,” Milonov emphasized.
Speaking about changes in US policy towards the South Caucasus with the arrival of the new president, the MP said that Donald Trump does not care about Armenia.
“The cost of all agreements with the US administration is clearly visible to everyone. The US position is that when they need something, they will promise you, you will take serious steps, and then they will all disappear and you will be left alone with these problems. Donald Trump does not care about Armenia. He has huge problems inside the United States. They have problems with the borders, millions of immigrants are drinking the blood out of the American economy and disrupting the safe life of Americans,” Milonov concluded.
