Azerbaijan is attempting to distort the content and goal of the Energy Charter Treaty by blaming Armenia for the “illegal exploitation of the Azerbaijani energy sources”, the Office of the Representative on International Legal Matters reports.
On November 19, Azerbaijan filed its Statement of Claim with the Permanent Court of Arbitration against Armenia with allegations of violating its sovereign rights towards energy resources.
Azerbaijan continues to demand compensation from Armenia for “violations of its sovereign rights to energy resources, the illegal exploitation, and damage caused to renewable energy sources in the Azerbaijani territories”. This refers to the activity of energy facilities on the territory of Artsakh.
“The Azerbaijani side is attempting to distort the content and goal of the Charter, because the goal of the Charter is the strengthening of sustainable investments and trade in the energy sector. However, the Azerbaijani side is trying to link this to some extent with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” the Office of the Representative on International Legal Matters says.
