Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov called Armenia’s proposal to withdraw troops from the border unacceptable for Azerbaijan.

“The Azerbaijani-Armenian border has not been demarcated. If we withdraw the troops, where are the guarantees that the positions will not be occupied by the other side? This proposal of the Armenian side is unacceptable for Azerbaijan,” Bayramov said at a press conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan.

According to Bayramov, today the Azerbaijani armed forces are on their territory and protecting their borders.

“Our position is that the borders of Azerbaijan should be protected solely by the Azerbaijani military. This is our sovereign right. We urge Armenia to respond constructively to our proposal. In this case, the situation can develop in a positive direction,” he added.

Bayramov also noted that the historic opportunity emerged for the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations. He added that Azerbaijan is currently forming its opinion on Armenia’s comments regarding the draft peace agreement and will soon present it to Armenia.

“Azerbaijan and Turkiye believe that neighbors in the region should live in peace. We expect Armenia to take steps in the same direction,” he said.
