Azerbaijan refused to participate in the meeting on the level of the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, in response to the remarks by the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O’Brien, during a congressional hearing on Wednesday.

As Azerbaijani media reported, the reason for the refusal was “a unilateral approach by the United States”, which could lead to the loss of its role as a mediator.

“Under these circumstances, we do not consider it possible to hold the proposed meeting on the level of the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington on November 20, 2023,” the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.

Earlier, James O’Brien announced that the United States stopped providing military and other aid to Azerbaijan and canceled a number of high-level visits, noting that relations with Azerbaijan cannot continue on a normal course if there is no progress on the path of peace with Armenia.
