Ignacio Sánchez Amor, a Member of the European Parliament from Spain and member of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, commented to Alpha News on the possible return of Armenians to Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Armenia has received people arriving from Nagorno-Karabakh, and today they are in need of support and assistance. First and foremost, this concerns basic issue: housing, social support, and a clear action plan from the government to address their problems. The possibility of return is a completely different issue, as it is directly linked to the formal end of the conflict. In my view, Azerbaijan should provide certain opportunities for return, but at the moment this seems unlikely. The issue of the final resettlement of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh should only be addressed after the formal end of the war period. For now, we must take care of people where they are — in Armenia,” Sánchez Amor said.

Speaking about the durability of the peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku, the MEP said that the world is evolving so unpredictably that it is impossible to foresee what steps will follow.

“Previously, no one could have imagined that both countries would create the situation that emerged with Trump’s involvement. The world is evolving so unpredictably that it is impossible to foresee what steps will follow. That is why I believe the country must at least be united on key issues related to relations with Azerbaijan and try to make the most of the negotiation period. But no one knows what may happen. It is impossible to predict, as no one previously thought a ceasefire was possible. Our history has recently accelerated significantly, and no one could have anticipated what we have witnessed in recent times,” Ignacio Sánchez Amor concluded.
