Azerbaijan will refuse to sign a peace treaty until Armenia fulfills its conditions — Alexander Krylov
Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist Alexander Krylov commented on the negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“Negotiations are ongoing, but the results are very moderate. Despite this, the Armenian side insists that now this format of bilateral talks directly with Azerbaijan is the most fruitful. No mediators are needed—neither Russian nor Western ones. Let’s see what these bilateral talks will eventually lead to,” Krylov said.
According to the expert, Azerbaijan will refuse to sign a peace treaty on any terms until the Armenian side fulfills its conditions.
“The Azerbaijani side puts forward several conditions before concluding a peace treaty, including changing the constitution of Armenia, they involve holding a referendum. It is also unclear how successful this referendum will be. So, we can say here that talks continue but in idle mode. Until the Armenian side fulfills Azerbaijan’s conditions, Azerbaijan will refuse to sign a peace treaty on any terms,” Krylov said.
Speaking about Russia’s mediation, the expert noted that it is up to the Armenian leadership and the Armenian voters who elect this leadership.
“If the Armenian authorities believe that this meets Armenia’s national interests and that Russia does not play a positive role here, as many Armenian officials have stated, this is their choice. Armenia is an independent state. It is free to choose its own mediators,” Krylov concluded.
