The Azerbaijani authorities are trying to spark Washington’s interest, international affairs expert Andranik Hovhannisyan told Alpha News, touching upon Russian-Azerbaijani relations.

“The escalation of Russian-Azerbaijani relations should be viewed from three points of view. If we look at this process from a broader perspective, it turns out that the Azerbaijani authorities are trying to spark Washington’s interest, since they see that a new administration in the United States can dramatically change its policy towards various regions. Since there is competition between Moscow and Washington, Beijing and Washington, as well as other superpowers in the current world order, Azerbaijan is trying to present itself as anti-Russian. In other words, Baku is trying to take this role away from Armenia and focus attention on itself,” Hovhannisyan said.

The expert stressed that Azerbaijan could cause problems for both Iran and Russia.

“I cannot say for sure whether Baku will be able to attract attention or not, but it should be noted that Washington was already interested in Azerbaijan, since this state can cause problems for both Iran and Russia. Since the United States is one of their main competitors, Azerbaijan can exert its influence on this process. In this way, Azerbaijan is trying to spark interest in the United States, since recently, especially when relations between Georgia and the West have worsened, Armenia was seen as a state that could attract the attention of the United States,” Hovhannisyan concluded.
