Bayramov to Borrell: Biased statements undermine EU’s role as impartial mediator

Building neighborly relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia based on mutual respect for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity is the only way to establish peace and stability in the South Caucasus, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said at a meeting with EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell in Brussels on December 11.

According to the Azerbaijani media, the sides discussed a number of regional and bilateral issues at the meeting.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister briefed Borrell on the process of normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations and noted the positive impact of recent confidence-building measures in that process.

Bayramov also noted that Azerbaijan highly appreciates the mediation efforts of the President of the Council of the European Union, Charles Michel, but at the same time, he stressed that “the biased statements by some EU officials undermine the EU’s role as the impartial mediator in this process.”
