Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist Mikhail Tilman commented on the meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska, as well as the outcome of the meeting of the Armenian Prime Minister with the President of Azerbaijan with the mediation of the US President.

“The goals of the meeting between Trump and Putin, of course, are different. Trump’s goal is to make some significant step towards ending, completing the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, or to be more precise, between Russia and the West. And this step doesn’t need to be substantial in reality; it only needs to appear significant in the media. A ceasefire, in any form, would be an ideal outcome for Trump. The Russian side has somewhat different goals. And one goal has already been achieved: the fact that the Russian president is flying to Alaska and will meet one-on-one with Trump, and then as part of a delegation, already means that Russia is not isolated. Of course, it was not isolated, but it was boycotted by the West. This is a very important moment for Russia. Secondly, of course, Vladimir Putin will have the opportunity to personally convey Russia’s position to the US president, discuss with him the reasons why this conflict arose, and then there really will be some positive progress in resolving this conflict,” Tilman said.

Tilman emphasized that Russia cannot afford to agree to a ceasefire, as it would merely delay the conflict.

“In my opinion, the expectations from the meeting are too high. I think that when the negotiations are over, many will be somewhat disappointed. Why? Because I do not see how an unconditional ceasefire, which the West is so eager to achieve, can be achieved. That is, Russia has no reason to agree to this, because the Russian armed forces are advancing, the front is slowly moving to the West. If you are winning, what is the point of agreeing to a truce? And secondly, the most important thing is that Russia cannot afford to agree to a truce, since this will mean a delayed conflict. That is, in other words, military actions will resume, but after some time,” Tilman emphasized.
