Chilean Chamber of Deputies recognizes Armenian Genocide

The Chilean Chamber of Deputies adopted a resolution on Wednesday recognizing the events of 1915 as genocide.

On Thursday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry called the chamber’s resolution “null and void”.

“Parliaments have no authority to interpret or pass a judgment on history,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in its statement, adding that the resolution contradicts the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, only a competent court can determine the crime of genocide.
