Diaspora will never oppose Church – Gevorg Bagratuni

The campaign against the Armenian Apostolic Church, initiated by Pashinyan, has no support in the Diaspora, Gevorg Bagratuni, Head of the National United Armenia NGO, told Alpha News.
According to him, Pashinyan initiated this campaign because he wants to make the Church serve his own political purposes.
“The Church in the Diaspora is the most important link in preserving Armenian identity. Some may support this campaign, but it is inconceivable that they would openly endorse it. Supporting it would mean standing against Armenian identity. This cannot be perceived or accepted by the entire Diaspora.
Aliyev and Erdogan’s fear of the Armenian Apostolic Church is a fact; otherwise, the pressure would not have been so intense following the Catholicos’ statement in Switzerland regarding Artsakh,” Bagratuni said.
Bagratuni noted that the Church has for centuries been an institution of national preservation, and in the Diaspora, a guardian of Armenian identity.
“For the enemy, it is important that Armenians forget their history. The Church, therefore, also represents a threat to the enemy,” Bagratuni concluded.
