Discussion of such case in court is direct violation of Constitution – lawyer on Bishop Gevorg lawsuit

Speaking with Alpha News, human rights defender Ruben Melikyan described as puzzling the lawsuit filed by Bishop Gevorg Saroyan against the Armenian Apostolic Church. According to him, such a claim cannot be subject to judicial review, as it contradicts the constitutional principle of separation between state and church.

“It is difficult to view this process as purely legal, especially considering Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s statement about not recognizing the decisions of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II. There is clearly a certain degree of state involvement in this matter, and discussing such an issue in court is a direct violation of the Constitution,” Melikyan said.
