Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Dmitry Zhuravlev commented on the news that the Armenian parliament has adopted in the first reading a bill launching the EU accession process.

“It is interesting how they will become members of the European Union without having borders with the European Union. The European Union sees everything through the prism of dislike for Russia. They are ready to take any CIS country for themselves so that we don’t get it, as if we are trying to somehow subjugate them, take them away or do something else. And that’s why they don’t think about the question of how it will work, where it will function. Since subsidies are being given to new republics and new countries, I do think that they place emphasis on these subsidies.

Firstly, the question is whether Armenia will be able to maintain its security without our support, and secondly, economic relations. It doesn’t go to the West, it can’t go to the West, it has Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey next to it. Who will it trade with? Turkey is not a member of the European Union, and the rest of the countries are not members of the EU either. How will it build its economic relations, which are now largely based on an alliance with Russia, even though the Armenian government is not very friendly towards us now?” Zhuravlev said.

“The EU cannot even ensure the security of West Africa, although these are former French colonies, so what kind of security can Armenia have? I’m not sure that any of the Europeans are really going to die for Armenia,” Zhuravlev concluded.
