Escalation should always be expected — Alexey Anpilogov
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Alexey Anpilogov commented on Baku’s position in the talks and the difficulties in signing a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“This only shows the incompatibility of the parties’ positions. That is, we must understand that until the parties reach a consensus, it is impossible to resolve this complex task. I believe here we must understand that now Azerbaijan, as the winner in the Karabakh war—although I remind you that Armenia did not officially participate in these actions, and all this actually boiled down to only verbal interventions—is now shifting the results of its victory to bilateral relations between Baku and Yerevan. In general, the endurance and courage of the Armenian side will determine where the claims of the Azerbaijani side will be stopped and to what extent the sovereignty of Armenia, as an independent and sovereign state, will be infringed upon and limited,” the expert said.
According to the expert, there is always a risk of military action in the region.
“Escalation should always be expected. We must understand that until there is a durable peace, there will be a situation of neither peace nor war, and this is a very dangerous situation that really has a wide field for border provocations,” Anpilogov concluded.
