EU membership and even normal relations with Russia are incompatible, says political scientist

Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist Dmitry Babich commented on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s wish to submit Armenia’s application for EU membership no later than this fall.
“EU membership and normal integration or even normal relations with Russia, especially membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization, are incompatible. Russia has been trying for many years to ensure that this is compatible, but using the example of Ukraine—and Ukraine is the most painful, difficult, but striking example—the European Union has shown that it does not give such a choice. Events in Ukraine have shown that this is impossible.
Moreover, Moldova was faced with the same choice. Many hoped that Moldova would be able to enter this single economic space while maintaining perspective. But every time the European Union says that this is impossible, you must choose,” Babich said.
According to the expert, if Armenia seriously joins the European Union, it will have to join the anti-Russian sanctions.
“As for Russia’s reaction to this, I will tell you from experience that for some time Russia will still stick with the fact that it has agreements with Armenia—not only within the CSTO but also other agreements. We have a Soviet friendship. But if Armenia seriously joins the European Union, it will then have to join the anti-Russian sanctions. Armenia will have to introduce a visa regime for Russia. This will lead to even greater distance and to Russia’s critical attitude towards the Armenian leadership.
However, I believe that at the same time Moscow will say—and it will be true—that we are not some enemies or disappointed in the Armenian people, but we are disappointed in the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. I believe this is what we will hear,” Babich concluded.
