EU mission in Armenia will not be extended — Grigor Balasanyan
We will soon witness the recall of the Armenian ambassador to the United States, international affairs expert Grigor Balasanyan told Alpha News.
“I think that after January, there will be certain cataclysms in Armenian-American relations, since Trump is a rather grudge-holding person. And based on information in the media, the Armenian ambassador to the United States took direct part in lobbying activities in favor of the Democrats. I believe we will soon witness the recall of the Armenian ambassador. I would like to note that since gaining independence, there has not yet been a case where the Armenian ambassador in any country directly organized the work of Armenian organizations to endorse this or that candidate.
As for the actions of the Democrats, I will note that they will try to complete at full speed the programs that they have regarding the post-Soviet territories, including Armenia. It is no coincidence that the USAID budget was increased by almost 50 million dollars, which are sent to non-governmental organizations. This will create certain problems for Armenia and will be a blow to the Armenian authorities. If the government tries to show some independence on some issues, the Democrats will use this tool through the public sector and through the so-called opposition parties, which for some unknown reason have decided that they are oppositional but serve the interests of the United States, which they do not even hide,” Balasanyan noted.
The expert stressed that the term of the EU monitoring mission on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border will not be extended in February 2025.
“As for the relations between Armenia and the EU, I think that if the Armenian authorities had a bit of dignity or thought a little about their country, then Aliyev’s demands, one of which is the withdrawal of EU observers from the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, would have been regarded as a signal that the European era in the South Caucasus is coming to an end. And in this regard, the issue of EU membership should be gradually pushed aside, since relying on Europe is becoming meaningless. And I assume that at the last moment this step will be taken, and the Europeans will have to face facts. Most likely, the EU mission will not be extended in February 2025,” Balasanyan concluded.
