Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist Vasily Koltashov commented on the reports that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a decree establishing a Department of European Integration at the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

“These kinds of messages could feed the Armenian population for 20, maybe even 40 years. One could endlessly speak of Armenia making great strides toward the European Union. This is necessary so that people believe Armenia is moving toward the EU, toward Europe, transforming from a barbaric country into a European, civilized one. Perhaps Armenia will gain visa-free travel to the EU, but I don’t know what Armenian citizens will see there, because the European Union is rapidly deteriorating. And if you’re not just traveling for tourism but seeking information to build a life there—about the EU’s condition, about how you can get settled there—you’ll see that the situation there is dire, the outlook is bleak, the economy is deteriorating, and crime is skyrocketing. Yet the authorities are relying on the Armenian population’s naivety, their belief in fairy tales, and their willingness to wait endlessly,” Koltashov said.

According to the expert, Pashinyan needs the creation of the European Integration Department at the Armenian Foreign Ministry to demonstrate a process that does not actually exist.

“Pashinyan is managing the information effectively. But this in no way advances Armenia’s European integration process. Such European integration is hardly even possible. The European Union needs Armenia as a source of cannon fodder against Russia,” Koltashov concluded.
